Learn the foundations for mending! You’ll learn eight basic stitches and some techniques to start your project. Materials will be provided as you learn the basics in the first part of class. Then, we’ll move on to the repair steps in the second half of class; please bring a repair project to focus on.
When bringing a project to mend, please remember that woven fabrics (cotton, linen, denim) are ideal for this workshop; however, you are welcome to bring a knit (sweater, stretch shirt), as I’ll also give a short presentation on mending these types of garments.
Textiles are the core of my creative journey. As a textile artist, educator, and curator, I delve into themes of gender, ancestry, social structures, and the environment. Through my work—embroidery, block printing, and the use of natural dyes on vintage and repurposed fabrics—I stitch narratives that reflect the rich complexity of human existence. Each stitch carries a story, highlighting our shared challenges and triumphs.
Sustainability is fundamental to my practice, shaping my material choices and methods. By rejuvenating existing resources, I craft pieces that are not only visually compelling but also advocate for environmental consciousness.
I earned my BFA in Costume Design and Production from the California Institute of the Arts (CalARTS), and my education extended beyond my major, exposing me to a variety of artistic disciplines and innovative thinkers. I spent 16 years in the vibrant worlds of film and television, collaborating with renowned brands such as Chevy, AT&T, MTV, Verizon, Honda, Pringles, and Toyota, among others. My experience spans television shows (Better Call Saul, Perpetual Grace, Outer Range, to name a few), films, music videos, print media for commercial and editorial projects, and runway events. In 2021, I transitioned from the film industry to launch my own art-forward brand, Knomad Tiger, and embrace my role as an independent artist.
In recent years, my work has been featured in various publications, such as Quiltfolk New Mexico Issue 33, The New Mexico Field Guide, Northern Eclecta, and Tempo. I also conduct workshops in embroidery, block printing, and natural dyeing techniques. This year, I have been invited to participate in several group exhibitions, including teaching workshops at Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú, New Mexico.

Have you ever found yourself fascinated by the art of Sashiko embroidery? This amazing technique, which originated in northern Japan, came from a practical need to repair and reinforce work clothes and household items. The term "Sashiko" translates to "little stab" or "little pierce" in Japanese, and it’s a delightful way to craft intricate designs with a series of stitches!
Join us for a fun and engaging class where you'll dive into the world of Sashiko stitching! We’ll cover the essentials: from the right equipment and tools to kickstart your journey, to the fundamental techniques that will have you stitching beautifully in no time.

Did you know that 40 minutes of creating art lowers the level of cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body? Art really does heal, and it's fun, too. Join us on the third Sunday of the month to take a short creative break at our Collage Playshop. No experience is necessary.
Creating art is just playing with materials. Most of us might already have our supplies ready and organized, but just don't have or take the time to play and create! This free Sunday session offers the time, space, and supplies to encourage playing and creating to anyone who is interested.
Kate will provide an embarrassment of collage supplies (including magazines, catalogs, glue sticks, foundation, etc.) to get folks started. Attendees can bring something they're already working on, their own images, magazines, etc. (be sure to bring your own scissors!) Prompts will be offered, but it's completely up to you what you want to collage! This is a casual gathering to bring the community together to create art and everyone is welcome to join! Bring a friend!
This event is free but requires registration. There is a $5.00 room use fee that will be collected and given to the Art League.

Join us every other Thursday for an awesome Art Club class with Mrs. Royalty! Each week our students will broaden their artistic horizons by utilizing various mediums, materials, and processes! Students will be exploring, experimenting, and discovering the best parts about being an artist themselves!
May 7: If you have ever played a search and find game, then you are going to love our created art pieces for today! Students will be creating a 2D art piece that takes place in the dark. But, never fear! We will be making a flashlight to help us see through our scenes! Students will learn a technique that utilizes light and dark in a creative and fun way. They will be practicing their drawing, as well as, designing skills to create the scene for their art pieces. They can even make their scenes into a search and find, if they like!
May 21: Have you ever thought about the process of printmaking? There are several types and techniques for printmaking, but it all begins with the transferal of a created design. Today, students will learn the beginning process of printmaking by practicing two types of transfer techniques. Each technique is an easy, visual, first step to the world of printmaking! Students will be using washable markers and oil pastels to complete these transfer processes.
**Please know that oil pastels can get a little messy. If you are able, please send your student with a large old T-shirt to wear over their regular clothes**
Can’t join us for every class? That is okay! We would love to see you for every class, but you can sign up for a preferred class or all three classes. Each class is $20 for Members and $25 for Non-Members. There are only 10 spots per class, so register now to claim your spot!

The Creatives Book Club: Turning Inspiration into Creation!
Do you have a beautiful stack of art project books that are fantastic for inspiration but rarely make it off the shelf? You’re not alone! We love flipping through the hundreds of projects in every medium imaginable, but carving out the focused time to actually sit down and complete them often feels impossible.
Welcome to The Creatives Book Club! This won't be a traditional book club. Instead of simply reading a book about art and creativity, we'll meet once a month to actually do a project from the chosen book. It’s the perfect way to explore new mediums, hold yourself accountable to your creative practice, and finally make those beautiful pages come to life!
We meet on the last Monday of the month, from 4-6pm
Join us for an evening of collective art-making, mingling, and shared discovery as we dive into a project from an inspiring book!
Our Creative Schedule (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM)
4:00 - 4:20: Set up your Materials & Settle In
4:20 - 5:30: Art-Making (project of choice from this month’s book)
5:30 - 5:40: Clean Up
5:40 - 6:00: Share & Mingle
Ready to trade reading for making? Register to save your seat.

May 14: Spring is in full swing, with summer on the way! Anywhere you go, you can hear the beautiful songs of the birds, so that will be our inspiration today! Students will design and paint their own 3D bird out of model magic and tempura paints. Students will also easily create a 3D nest for their bird to live in. These birds can either be real or completely imagined up by our students! Can’t wait to see what kind of bird they create!

Slip into a place where time softens and busy minds can exhale.
Choose from a marvel of pencils, markers, and enchanting coloring pages & coloring books, then let your hands make the magic: no pressure, no deadlines, just the quiet rhythm of color on paper.
This is a soft landing for full days and full thoughts. Come alone or with a friend, drift in conversation or sit in peaceful silence. Both are welcome here. Step away from the noise for a while and settle into something simple and soothing. We’ll gather around big tables, pass colors back and forth, admire each other’s pages, and remember what it feels like to make something just for the sake of it. Much like the Off Grid Club that Miranda founded last year, she has designed everything to feel effortless, grounding, and a little whimsical while we unplug.
Leave with a finished artwork (or not!) and leave feeling lighter, more clear, and gently reconnected, to yourself and your fellow creatives.
- All materials provided
- No experience needed
- All identities welcome
- Morning gathering
- Creative meditative, and calming, a place for your mind to land and your body to relax
- You are welcome to bring your own coloring pages or books
Artist Bio:
Miranda believes that art is for everyone. Making art together in a space without judgment challenges pre-conceived notions and inspires dialogue, cultivating understanding and compassion. Through her artistic endeavors, she has come to understand that our ties with one another and with nature are essential. In a world where capitalism often encourages us to see ourselves as isolated individuals, Miranda believes in breaking down those barriers. Art-making and appreciation belong to everyone, transcending titles and credentials, and engaging with art alongside each other is a way for us to reconnect and realize that we are all a part of the same.

Through her artistic endeavors, she has come to understand that our ties with one another and with nature are essential. Part 1: Gelli Printing
Gelli Plate Printing: A Color‑Splashed Journey Into Play
Welcome to a morning of joyful mess‑making, where the rules are few, the colors are bold, and your only real job is to let yourself play. In this spirited session, we’ll dive into the enchanting world of monoprinting—a process where each print is pulled only once, making every piece a little surprise gift from your creative self. No duplicates, no perfection, just pure, unrepeatable magic.
We’ll coax color across the gelli plate, press in textures from botanicals, stencils, and odd little treasures, and delight in the unexpected patterns that appear. This is art as exploration: a chance to loosen your grip, follow your curiosity, and discover what happens when you give yourself permission to experiment without expectations.
By the end of the morning, you’ll have a vibrant stack of one‑of‑a‑kind prints—each one a tiny record of your creative courage and playfulness. These prints will become the raw materials for our afternoon adventure, where we’ll transform them into something new and uniquely yours.
Part 2: Handmade Book Creation
In the first half of our retreat, you captured textures, layers, and colors through the fluid, experimental process of Gelli printing. Next, we will take those vibrant prints and give them a physical home.
During the second half of Saturday’s workshop, we will transform your favorite prints into a structural Accordion Artist Book. We’ll start by finding the rhythm in your prints using paint, pens, and markers to add mindful patterns and marks that make the pages uniquely yours. Then, we move into the engineering phase, where we tear, fold, and join your papers to create a sculptural book that literally stands on its own.
No art experience? You’ll love the step-by-step guidance that turns messy prints into a polished, professional-looking object.
Seasoned artist? You’ll enjoy the sophisticated techniques for adding hidden pockets, secret flaps, and custom closures that make a book truly interactive.
The result is a layered, three-dimensional companion that can expand to show off your work or fold down into a compact, private keepsake. It’s the perfect place to hold your ideas, your marks, and the memories of our weekend together.
Our Flow:
-Friday Evening Gathering, 5pm-8pm (location provided after registration): Welcome, intention setting, and community connection
-Saturday Morning, 9am-12pm: Gelli printing, color-play, and texture exploration
-Saturday Afternoon, 1pm-4pm: Transforming prints into a custom artist book
-Sunday Morning, 9am-12pm: Open Studio time to polish, play, and connect
Your creative reset is waiting. We’ve cleared the schedule so you can clear your head. Whether you’re a lifelong maker or a curious beginner, come for the prints, stay for the community, and leave with a finished book that holds the magic of the whole weekend. Register to join the journey from start to finish!

You will have time to work on 4 or more leather depending on size and complexity. Choices for your projects can be from the following: Make a leather shoulder bag or two, make a tote, learn how to use a wood burning tool to inscribe a design onto the leather and then colorize it. With your first bag all done on Day One you can make some accessories for days two and three, such as a leather belt, phone pouch, key fobs, “magic braid” bracelets, and other smaller projects…OR…you can make another bag such as a Fringe Bag, portfolio, etc.! All leathers, materials, tools, and instructions are provided, along with templates. If you have an idea for a leather project you can bring it and can make it real. As time allows you can learn how to make tassels and fringe to add to your projects. No artistic ability is necessary, nor is any previous leather working experience. Bring a lunch. Bring your enthusiasm, and your desire to make something beautiful!
Artist Bio:
Tom Slavicek has been leather crafting since he was a Boy Scout, when he earned his Leatherwork Merit Badge on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. During his career days as an executive director for the Boy Scouts of America, his hobby managed to stay alive and thrive in the form of creating numerous Native American leather/beadwork outfits and articles of clothing, along with his favorite item, hand-crafted leather pouches and shoulder bags. After a 37-year career serving young people, Tom retired in 2011 and he and his wife, Karen, moved to Dahlonega, GA. He then served for three years as executive director for a non-profit transitional housing facility for the homeless he helped to organize in Dahlonega. His enjoyment of working with leather is coming to fruition through his crafting of various styles of pouches and bags, with the added feature of inscribed images on the front of the pouches. Tom uses a wood-burning tool to inscribe the images free hand directly onto the leather. The color on the bags is created by adding India Inks and/or acrylic leather paints. Each pouch is a unique work of art, and no two are alike. Currently Tom teaches leather classes at about a dozen venues across north Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina including Blue Ridge Art enter in Seneca, SC, Quinlan Center for the arts in Gainsville, GA, and the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts in Young Harris, GA. www.blackeagleleather.com

"A journal is not just a book; it is a laboratory for the soul." -Bernadine Joyce
Beneath all our emotions and labels is a complex world of color, texture, and rhythm. In this three-day intensive, we aren't making masterpieces; we’re making containers. Using a mix of mark-making, collage, intuitive painting, and writing, you will transform a simple journal into a living document of your own resilience. Whether you are navigating a transition, processing stress, or simply looking for a way to belong to yourself again, this workshop offers a grounded, creative path back to your center.
Over the course of three weeks, we will focus on the three essential functions of a therapeutic art journal:
1. Emotional Expression
The journal is a safe place to discharge. When the nervous system is overwhelmed, we use the page to externalize what feels too big to carry.
2. Insight
Art has a funny way of telling us things our logical brain hasn't figured out yet. By looking back at the images and patterns we create, we gain visual evidence of our inner worlds.
3. Record Keeping
Your journal becomes a tangible history of your survival and growth. It acts as a "witness" to your process, allowing you to see how far you’ve come.
Like all art-making, this Art Therapy Workshop may be therapeutic, but it is not a substitute for therapy. Privacy in the Art Place Studio classroom is not guaranteed.
All supplies will be provided, including a sketchbook to use as your art journal for this course. Bring your willingness to play, and your desire to connect and share!

Join us for a relaxing session of mindful art-making. We blend the 7 essential principles of mindfulness with intuitive art practices, using drawing and watercolors as tools for relaxation. You’ll be guided through a series of creative mark-making exercises and grounding techniques, culminating in an extended, meditative painting session.
During this month’s session, we will use watercolor paints and mark-making tools to create a mandala drawing in the style of your choosing. Mandala is the Sanskrit word for circle. It is used in Eastern traditions as a tool of meditation. Mandalas include shapes and symbols that you create intuitively. Many mandalas have a repeated pattern of shapes that make a cohesive design, others do not and are abstract.
What’s Included in Your Session:
-Opening Guided Meditation & Focused Grounding Exercises.
-The "Principles of Mindfulness for Art-Making" Takeaway Guide.
-Hands-on instruction for line work and meditative mark-making.
-An extended period of self-directed, meditative painting and creation.
-A closing sharing circle for connection and reflection.
Absolutely no art experience is required! All supplies—including rich watercolor paints, drawing pens, and acrylic markers—are provided for your use. Just bring your willingness to play, and your desire to connect and share!
