About the Class:  Create Your Own Family Story Necklac.  e Do you have beloved ancestral jewelry languishing in your jewelry box waiting to be celebrated and adored again? Your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters have shared special adornments and heirlooms with you. Sort through those pendants, charms, talismans, single earrings, rings, bracelets, chains, etc., dust them off, and bring them to this simple jewelry making class. Your Family Story necklace (and earrings & bracelets) will hold your favorite pieces that remind you that your mothers are still with you and that love never dies. This is a simple jewelry-making class, so don’t be intimidated! I will provide instruction, demonstrations, sterling chain and findings, and vintage Swarovski beads. There’s lots to play with as you arrange and assemble your rich, story-filled necklace. This will give you an introduction to “how to” create jewelry so that you can use other treasures to create Story Necklaces for others in your family. As you consider your necklace, think about your loved ones’ favorite colors; perhaps that can give you a direction to start imagining which of your treasures you will choose (for this necklace). I will have a plethora of vintage Swarovski crystal beads to match almost any color you might have in mind! What fun you’ll have as you sort through your treasures! And again, when you create your necklace, you may share a story or two with others. Bring whatever jewelry calls to “take me!” We won’t use them all, but they’ll at least be there for the party. Play with your intuition. That’s all assemblage jewelry is: playing with one’s imagination (and one’s fodder) and using a few simple techniques. Just to be sure you know: I am an assemblage artist, not a metal smith nor a lapidarist. I will offer cold connection assemblage jewelry instruction. But we won’t be able to repair, solder, etc. what you bring. I can show you how to turn some pins into pendants, but that’s about it. If you want to include a special pendant, etc, in need of repair, please have that repair done before the class. I have some jewelry tools to share. We’ll need needle-nose pliers, flat nose pliers, round needle nose pliers, and a wire cutting tool. If you have any, please bring them along also. Otherwise, we may share tools as well as stories! Our mothers still celebrate us. Let’s circle to celebrate them!   This will be an intro to simple jewelry assemblage. No previous skills necessary. Sense of adventure and exploration are necessary!

Supplies:   I provide basic sterling silver components (chain, findings, clasps) as well as vintage Swarovski crystals. Students will bring their treasured jewelry pieces to add their stories to their necklace. Students also need to bring needle-nose pliers, flat nose pliers, round needle nose pliers, and wire cutting tool.  $100.  materials fee to be paid directly to Kate.

Artist Bio:  Kate Stockman was born in Charleston, SC, where natives say we are a lot like the Chinese, "We eat lots of rice and worship our ancestors." Because of this passion, Kate has developed different classes to honor our mothers and grandmothers. She loves telling and hearing stories. We all have lots of them. Join any of Kate's classes to share something about your story!
