Do you have beloved ancestral jewelry languishing in your jewelry box waiting to be celebrated and adored again? Have your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, or sisters shared special adornments and heirlooms with you? Sort through those pendants, charms, talismans, single earrings, rings, bracelets, chains, etc., dust them off, and bring them to this simple jewelry making class. Your Family Story necklace (and earrings & bracelets, if you choose) will hold your favorite pieces that remind you that your mothers are still with you and that love never dies.

This is a simple jewelry-making class, so don’t be intimidated! I will provide instruction, demonstrations, sterling chain and findings, and vintage Swarovski beads. There’s lots to play with as you arrange and assemble your rich, memory-filled necklace. This will give you an introduction to “how to” create jewelry so that you can use other treasures to create Story Necklaces for others in your family.

As you consider your necklace, think about your loved ones’ favorite colors (or yours); perhaps that can give you a direction to start imagining which of your treasures you will choose for this necklace. I will have a plethora of vintage Swarovski crystal beads to match almost any color you might have in mind to add to the mix!

What fun you’ll have as you sort through your treasures! And again, when you create your necklace, you may share a story or two with others. Bring whatever jewelry calls to “take me!” We won’t use them all, but they’ll at least be there for the party.

Play with your intuition. That’s all assemblage jewelry is: playing with one’s imagination (and one’s fodder) and using a few simple techniques.

Our mothers still celebrate us. Let’s gather to celebrate them!

Artist Bio:
Kate has been creating art of some kind or another for most of her life (since those pasta necklaces in kindergarten!). Springing from her passion for combining color and texture, she has been creating multi-media art – including unique assemblage jewelry and hand-crafted books – for over 30 years.

Kate creates to honor Nature and the Self. An assemblage artist, Kate designs one-of-a-kind jewelry TouchStones Anecdotal Art (each piece has a story; perhaps it touches your story) by blending vintage and antique sterling components, semi-precious stones, handmade lamp work glass beads, and occasional bits of Nature into remarkable combinations which she calls “Re-Imagined Heirlooms”. She is also a bookbinder and relishes creating albums and journals (which she calls "Treasures Re-Covered") using covers from antique and vintage books that have been tucked away in an attic or are headed for the recycle bin.

Kate is a teacher and relishes designing playshops (we’re not working, so why call them workshops?) that encourage creativity in a safe setting. Many of her playshop participants lament “I don’t have a creative bone in my body!” and Kate cherishes seeing the looks of pride and surprise on their faces after they have had the time to just play – mingling supplies with their imaginations.
