Do you have beloved ancestral jewelry languishing in your jewelry box waiting to be celebrated and adored again? Did your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters share special adornments and heirlooms with you? Sort through those pendants, charms, talismans, single earrings, rings, bracelets, chains, etc., dust them off, and bring them to this simple jewelry-making class. Your Family Story necklace (and earrings & bracelets, if you choose) will hold your favorite pieces that remind you that your mothers are still with you and that love never dies.

This is an intro to simple jewelry-making, so don’t be intimidated! Kate will provide instruction, demonstrations, sterling chain and findings, vintage Swarovski beads, and seed beads. There will be lots to play with as you arrange and assemble your rich necklace of mementos. You will leave with your own unique family story necklace as well as the knowledge of how to create jewelry so that you can use other treasures to create Story Necklaces for others in your family. The materials fee of $58 for necklace findings (+ $15 for earrings, + $25 for bracelet, if you choose) is payable to the instructor on the day of class and is in addition to the tuition.

As you consider your own necklace, think about your loved ones’ favorite colors (or yours); perhaps that can give you a direction to start imagining which of your treasures you will choose for this necklace. I will have a plethora of vintage Swarovski crystal beads to match almost any color you might have in mind!

What fun you’ll have as you sort through your treasures! As we create our necklaces, we will likely share a story or two. Bring whatever jewelry calls to “take me!” We won’t use them all, but they’ll at least be there for the party. Play with your intuition. That’s all assemblage jewelry is: playing with one’s imagination (and one’s fodder) and using a few simple techniques.

Please understand: I am an assemblage artist, not a metalsmith nor a lapidarist. I will offer cold connection assemblage jewelry instruction. But we won’t be able to repair, solder, etc. what you bring. I can show you how to turn some pins into pendants, but that’s about it. If you want to include a special pendant, etc, in need of repair, please have that repair done before the class.

I have some jewelry tools to share. We’ll need needle-nose plyers, flat-nose plyers, round needle-nose plyers, and a wire-cutting tool. If you have any, please bring them along also. Otherwise, we may share tools as well as stories!

Our mothers still celebrate us. Let’s circle to celebrate them!

Supplies:
In addition to their family treasures, students need to bring needle-nose plyers, flat-nose plyers, round needle-nose plyers, and wire-cutting tools. Close-up glasses if you need them!

Artist Bio:
Kate Stockman was born in Charleston, SC, where natives say we are a lot like the Chinese: "We eat lots of rice and worship our ancestors." Kate has a passion for honoring ancestors and has developed different classes to focus on our mothers and grandmothers. She loves telling and hearing stories, and we all have lots of them! Join any of Kate's classes to explore your story!

Kate is an assemblage jewelry artist, a bookbinder, and a writer. She relishes seeing the surprised smiles full of pride on her students' faces after they have told themselves the story that they are not creative. We are all creative! It's just another form of play!
