About the Class: Who says it isn't written in stone? We will craft a unique, stone-covered mini-book as a pendant for a necklace! Pages will be made of mica with words cut from vintage texts to give a thought and to complement the cover. Back covers will be made of leather with an opportunity for an image on the inside covers. Then we will create the metal binding for the book, which will also be the attachment to a chain. (Metals provided are all of copper; if you want to use another metal, please bring with you.) Basic supplies (stone covers, leather, texts, mica, wire, chain) are provided. Feel free to bring what you might like to use for yourself.
Supplies: I provide basic supplies including stone cover, leather, mica, text, wire, chain
Students must provide: exacto knife, Straight edge/ruler, self-healing pad to protect table, scissors, Awl for punching holes in mica, pencil, images
handmade papers (I will have some, too), close-up glasses, if you need them.
Artist Bio: Kate Stockman believes she was a monk in a previous lifetime. She finds deep peace in stitching books. Her "Treasures Re-Covered" series uses antique/vintage book covers fated to the recycle bin into unique handmade journals. Kate is also an assemblage jewelry artist (focusing on vintage sterling) and a collage/paper artist. She and her wood-turner husband Andrew live in a little cabin in the woods outside of Saluda. She is grateful.
