About the Class: Art of the Self Portrait
Dive into the art of your SELF! This class considers the history of the self-portrait. We will immerse ourselves in playful exercises to create multiple self-portraits. There will be a follow up workshop, that will develop portraits from the introductory class. That class will explore how to repurpose the self-portraits that you might not like so much. You will learn how to make your own art book with a Japanese stab binding. This class is for all levels.
Supplies: Some supplies will be provided; however, bring your sketchbook and a medium of your choosing and a mirror. Alternate mediums will be available for use during class. Suggested mediums include: graphite, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, ink, acrylic, collage, camera
Artist Bio: I am Kadie Sanders and I paint, make books, and explore craft traditions here in Appalachia. Mentorship has always attracted me to growing as an artist. I have some incredible ones- a decorative faux painter, a museum curator, and a Cherokee narrative artist, to name a few. Therefore, I seek opportunities to mentor young artists on their journeys.
Lately, I am into repurposing old art works. I never thought I would cut up esteemed paintings, but wow, it's a free feeling to give new meaning to things! This is my effort towards fostering sustainable art practice. When I am not at my Art Place Studio #7, you can find me mothering my most amazing daughter! Or I am at the Allison-Deaver House Museum in Pisgah Forest, working on ways to raise money for porch restorations. By the way, if you have never taken a still-life drawing class of artifacts in a 209-year-old house, you might come draw with me!
