About the Class: In my early days as a painter I was very lucky to meet and study under a world renowned watercolorist by the name of Tony van Hasselt, A.W.S. We became close friends and for several years I was invited to assist on Tony's week-long outdoor painting workshops. I learned so much from this experience. At the time Tony was promoting a book he co-authored with Judi Wagner called the Watercolor Fix-it Book. In this book Tony and Judi introduce the Eight Building Blocks of Painting. For this workshop you will be learning and practicing these building blocks and I will share with you demos and methods for implementing each one. These building blocks are not rules but proven guidelines. And over 30 years later, I still use these guidelines every time I paint. This is a 3-day workshop and will be painting with watercolors.  Previous attendance to BBI is not necessary.

Supplies: I will provide a supply list with strongly recommended materials that will be available locally.

Experience: If you are a beginner, an art instructor, or a seasoned professional, this workshop is for you! No matter what level of experience you have, I promise you will learn so much.

About the Instructor/Artist: My name is Bill Abel and I live in Hendersonville, NC. I have painted watercolors since I was a kid and I've been painting and teaching watercolors professionally for over 30 years. While growing up in Florida I painted many seascapes and coastal scenes that were familiar to me. When I moved to Tallahassee, Florida, I fell in love with painting rural settings like old Tobacco Barns, canopy roads, and beautiful estuaries along the Florida panhandle. In 2004, I moved to Falls Church, Virginia, where I visited the Blue Ridge Mountains, Washington, DC, and surrounding towns for inspiration. And for the next 15 years living there I became established as a portrait painter of people, pets, and places. It was in 2020, just a year after my last workshop with Tony van Hasselt in his home state of Maine, that I moved to Hendersonville, NC. I have been very lucky to find Art Mob Studios and the Art League of Henderson County! While here, I've painted city landmarks, mountain vistas, pet portraits, waterfalls, white squirrels and even several black bears! My watercolor journey continues and I'm very happy to be teaching again this year!
